    Ottawa's Perfect Independent Bookstore
    By Bryan Kitch

Having worked as an antiquarian bookseller at one time, independent bookstores are always of interest to me. Perfect Books, which specializes in fiction, history, and mystery, is a great place to discover some of Ottawa's hometown writers, placing an emphasis on surfacing local authors.

Situated in the cobblestone courtyard that runs parallel to Sussex, this is my favourite coffee shop in Lowertown. I love to people watch while eating my warmed and buttered cheese and peppercorn scone.

Cocktails and Southern Hospitality at Union 613
    By Amie Watson

There's a lot of soul in the bourbon-heavy cocktail menu at Union 613. Skip the restaurant bar upstairs in favor of the downstairs speakeasy where you can enjoy your choice of a classic cocktail, seasonal creation, or house specialty in a more relaxed atmosphere. You can't go wrong with a Union Sazerac (Raynal XO brandy, house-made gum syrup, Riga black balsam wash and Peychauds bitters) or an Old Fashioned (Buffalo Trace bourbon, cinnamon gum syrup and bitters). But for a locally-inspired tipple, try the Ottawa (Centennial Rye, Melleti Amaro, birch syrup and Angostura bitters). Despite their obvious expertise, the mixologists are endearingly humble, insisting, "We really don’t know what we are doing but we enjoy getting drunk."

    Scones So Good, It's Magic
    By Bryan Kitch

The Scone Witch is a great place for a quick bite, a casual lunch, or even just a cuppa in the morning (though it's nearly impossible to leave without one of this place's "spellbinding" baked goods). Grab a table early, or take something to go—either way, you'll be pleased with the results!

The best place to find a sandwich downtown is La Bottega. Stacked with meats, cheeses, hot eggplant, hot peppers, lettuce, tomato and olives, these $5 sandwiches can be shared with a friend along with a soda and a chocolate bar, cannoli, or a gluten-free cookie. Peak times are noon to 1pm, so expect a line if you go during that time. Great if you're solo here on business and looking for a quick bite, but also if you want to stock up your hotel room with snacks (including cheeses, lots of delicious cheeses).

Wine & Charcuterie at Murray Street

Murray Street has all the makings of a nice evening, with a healthy selection of Old & New World wines, outstanding charcuterie, and a constantly changing menu that's upscale without being pretentious. It's a nice place for a leisurely meal, not far from the Market.

Bread & Sons is by far my favourite takeout breakfast spot in Ottawa. Goat's cheese and rosemary borekas with fair trade coffee, or croissant breakfast sandwiches with asiago cheese, sea salt, and a poached egg are my top picks.

    Festivals, Festivals, Festivals

So many festivals take place in Ottawa that they merit their own network: The Ottawa Festival's Network. Bluesfest draws a lot of big names, Ottawa Writer's Fest introduces you to a range of intellectuals with interesting stories to tell, and the Ottawa International Animation Festival is one of the biggest of its kind. Most festivals are centrally located around Major's Hill Park behind Chateau Laurier, and Parques Jaques Cartier, in front of city hall.

Check out the hanger at the Canada Aviation and Space Museum and jump into the cockpit of two historic planes. You can even experience what it’s like to fly in the full-motion platform flight simulator where you get to (virtually) takeoff and land in the Rockcliffe and Gatineau airports. A staffed kids area with toys, books and crafts will keep young children occupied while you check out the WWI Sopwith biplanes, the jet-age VTOL-capable Harrier, and the last functioning Lancaster bomber in North America.
