    Not-So-Poor Richard's
    By Bryan Kitch

Don't be fooled by the name. Poor Richard's Book Shoppe is rich in substance, with an interesting and varied selection of titles, as well as live music, poetry readings, and spoken word. This family-owned shop also put some work into their staff picks and social media (check out their Facebook page for 'This Day in Literature' posts). Well worth stopping by.

    Flavors from the Garden
    By Steve Cook

I never knew being stuffed could be so guilt-free. If you are looking for a delicious, healthy, satisfying way to increase your veggie intake, Fern is a marvelous option. You will get all the essentials like beans, rice, greens, vegetables. And don't forget goat cheese. The Laughing Buddha Bowl and Warm Kale Salad are two of my favorites.

Fern even offers evening yoga classes in the parking lot!

    Film and Photography Education/Appreciation
    By Steve Cook

The Light Factory, situated in Uptown Charlotte, is one of only four museums for photography and film in the United States. The Light Factory's mission is to promote the power of image by informing, challenging, and stimulating audiences through photography, film, and other light-based media to see their world through a different lens.

I have been a member for the past five years, and the photography exhibits have been inspiring, provocative, and educational. Spend some time walking through the Light Factory exhibits. If you are in the area for more than a couple of days, film and photography classes, ranging in duration from a day to a few weeks, are also offered.

    Great Coffee Experience
    By Steve Cook

James Yoder established Not Just Coffee in 2011. You can't find a better selection of pour-over coffee or handcrafted espresso anywhere. The atmosphere is hip, part of the trendy new 7th Street Market (formerly Reid's). Go there more than once, and you are certain to see some of the same familiar faces; Not Just Coffee boasts a growing number of regulars, and for good reason. The service is speedy and friendly, and the beverage is always perfect. They recently started serving wine, as well.

It is conveniently located near the 7th Street LYNX light rail station, and newly added bike-sharing location. If you find yourself in Uptown (or Atherton Mills in Southend—James is expanding his operation there June 11), stop in and say hi to James or one of his friendly staff. 7th Street Market has public Wi-Fi, so grab your laptop or iPad and stay a while. The seating around the bar or at a nearby table is conducive for some relaxing down time.

    The Epicenter of Entertainment
    By Steve Cook

Situated just one block from the center of the city, EPICENTRE has a lot to offer anyone, anytime. Best experienced in the evening, it's a great place to unwind with a drink and live music on the roof (seasonal) with a great view of the Charlotte skyline. The action continues in multiple venues throughout the evening—their dine-in movies, bowling, and shops are well worth the trip.

If you work up an appetite, everyone is covered. I'd suggest a marbled rye sandwich from Bruegger's Bagels or a High Protein Almond Mocha from Smoothie King.
